The travel days in detail

Day 1: Arrival in Antananarivo

Our team will greet you immediately upon arrival at Ivato International Airport and transfer you to your hotel. Villa Sibylle is a private guesthouse near the airport, surrounded by a tropical garden. Relax from the flight and enjoy your first dinner there in Madagascar with an overnight stay.

Day 2: Antananarivo - Ampefy

Daily stage of 160 km The short first stage gives you the opportunity to take control of the motorcycle. After the city, the landscape becomes pleasant, the day begins with a visit to the Lemurs Park, then continue on roads with little traffic to Analavory. The small town of Ampefy is located on Lake Kavitaha west of Antananarivo in the center of Madagascar. The area of Ampefy is characterized by the volcanic landscape. Volcanoes that were formed two million years ago are scattered over an area of 400 km². The area is very fertile due to its volcanic origin and the general ambience is very peaceful and relaxing. Overnight stay in a guesthouse

 Day 3: Ampefy - Antsirabe

Stage for the day : 150 km Our escapade in the heart of the highlands extends to the second largest city in the center of the island, Antsirabe. Very beautiful route over an almost untraveled road that is located at an altitude of over 2000 meters. Antsirabe is located 170km south of Antananarivo, this large city is an important economic center and famous for its pleasant high altitude climate and healing springs. I ounded in the 19th century by Norwegian missionaries, Antsirabe has a much more "European" feel than other towns in Madagascar, as evidenced by the magnificent colonial mansions and regular buildings.

Day 4: Antsirabe - Sahambavy

Daily stage of 160 km You will leave Antananarivo province for Fianarantsoa province. As the altitude decreases, the vegetation becomes denser before the gates of Sahambavy, the capital of Malagasy tea.

Day 5: Sahambavy - Ambalavao

Daily stage of 100 km After breakfast you will visit Sahambavy tea plantation. After breakfast the journey continues on the well paved road further and further south. Huge granite rocks and the barren red laterite soil we leave behind us the landscape is green and changes again tremendously. We drive through many small villages whose colors vary from red earth color to bright red with green background. The landscape is rich green, the rice fields are a mosaic of all possible shades of green in the mirror of countless ponds. The region of Fianarantsoa is intensively used for agriculture. We visit the photo studio of the world-famous photographer Pierrot Men in Fianarantsoa and then a completely different mountain landscape begins. Overnight stay in Ambalavao

Day 6: Ambalavao - Ranohira

Daily stage of about 200 km Gradually you will leave the plateaus to discover an extraordinary sacred mountain range: the Isalo Massif. The day begins with a hike in a reserve founded and managed by the local village community, it is the: "Association Anja Miray", called Anja Park for short. In the reserve of about 3 hectares, which is located 13 km to the south, hundreds of calicoes cavort, also rare reptiles like the dwarf chameleon Brookesia will be shown to you. The park is also home to several burial caves and spiritual meeting places of the local Betsileo and is well worth the 2 to 4 hour visit. Today we continue south, the fertile highlands end here and a landscape of huge granite rocks surrounds us. Short rest in Ihosy and then after about 2 hours drive we reach Ranohira, located in the middle of the wide plateau of Horombe. Here lies the famous Isalo National Park which we will visit the next day.

Day 7 - Isalo National Park

Daily stage of about 100 km Visit to the Isalo Park. This spectacular site of 81 540 ha, is completely silent and rich in mystery. More than 400 species, most of them endemic, cover the vast savannah areas that you will visit with a specialized guide. Amidst the barren and mineral landscape, there are magnificent natural pools and waterfalls surrounded by lush tropical nature. The duration and severity of the day's hike will be adjusted to the participants' abilities.

Day 8: Ranohira - Tulear

Stage for the day: 240 km The last and longest stage of the circuit, the road that will take you to Tulear, leaves behind the mountain massifs and reveals a dry and semi-desert landscape, the territory of the famous baobabs of Madagascar. Savannahs, thorn forests, Zombitse National Park, sapphire mines-exciting adventures to the Tropic of Capricorn.

Day 9-Tulear - Antananarivo (Domestic flight)

Appeal for donations

After 10 months of total inactivity, self-employed people in the tourism industry in Madagascar are completely without income. There is no opening of the borders in sight in Madagascar and we are at the beginning of the rainy season, which is the low season, even in normal times. I have started a fundraiser for the guides and drivers I know well. From this money we will buy rice and other essentials and distribute them regularly, if possible, until the resumption of travel activities in April 2021 at the earliest. My special thanks to those who have already donated. I will start buying rice tomorrow and will begin distributing it this week.
