About the trip

This very varied and scenic tour takes you over the highlands, the west with Kirindy and the baobab alley, the mountains near Ambalavao, the rugged mineral landscapes of the Isalo Massif, to the Mozambique Channel where a few days of relaxation in a beautiful lodge are announced.

Highlands in many varieties, dry forest with baobabs, rare animals like the fossas (Cryptoprocta ferox), the only predator on Madagascar.

Mountains with unforgettable landscapes, the rugged rock formations in the Isalo Mountains, Zombiste Vohibasia, Ilakaka and heavenly peace under the Tropic of Capricorn are on the program of this trip.

The travel days in detail

Day 1- Arrival in Antananarivo

The first day is initially dedicated to your arrival in Madagascar. We will pick you up after your landing at the airport Ivato in the Madagascan capital Antanarivo and bring you to your place of accommodation in Villa Sibylle. If you have any food or beverage requests for your arrival, it is best to let us know in advance so we can take care of them.

Day 2 - Ride from Antananarivo to Antsirabe

On this day of your  Journey through MadagascarYou will travel from the capital Antananarivo to Antsirabe. The journey takes you first through the colorful hustle and bustle of the suburbs the capital and then through Behenjy and Ambatolampy. In one of these two places you will have a lunch break and you can strengthen yourself in one of the restaurants there. Afterwards you will continue to Antsirabe, a important business location in Madagascar. The distance from Antananarivo to Antsirabe is about 170 kilometers and is lined with exciting landscapes. Antsirabe itself inspires with its attractive colonial villas and its European look. The overnight stay is in the hotel Chambres du Voyageur in whose garden, with a little luck, numerous chameleons and even ray turtles can be discovered.

Day 3 - You discover Antsirabe and the surrounding area

As it was already mentioned, Antsirabe is one of the wealthy cities and in the past it was also considered as a Spa. In the surroundings of this city there are numerous unusual places to discover: The Antafofo waterfall, the breathtaking mountain panorama and the fertile fields at Betafo, all of which you will discover on a short hike.Afterwards, there is also a stimulating City tour on the plan, where you have to take a look at the traditional market as well as at the imposing Hotel des Thermes should throw. Day 4 - About Miandrivazo to Morondava

Miandrivazo is the next big point on your itinerary and at the same time one of the hottest places in all of Madagascar. Accordingly, it is necessary to ensure that you always have enough drinking water. The Trip to Miandrivazo is very varied and leads westward and through the Bongolava Mountains. The road to the capital of the Menabe region, Morondava, is well developed. We arrive early enough at the famous Baobab Avenue, then we continue to the Hotel Kimony Resort.

Day 5 - Morondava to Kirindy

Kirindy, 50 km northeast of the city of Morondava, is a privately managed forest. Dominated by majestic baobab trees and a forest canopy as tall as 14 meters, this protected area of about 100 square kilometers is the only place where the world's smallest known primate, the giant jumping rat, occurs. Kirindy is the best place on the entire island to observe fossas, especially during the mating season between October and December. It is also home to seven species of lemurs. The most common are the common brown lemurs and the sifakas . 40 species of birds, 50 species of reptiles and 15 species of amphibians are also found in this magnificent forest. The flora is also quite unusual and contains several locally endemic plant species. The two baobab species of Kirindy reach simply incredible sizes here. The night walk is a highlight of any visit to this area. Visitors can spot nocturnal lemurs, fossils, the giant jumping rat, reptiles, frogs and rare insects.

Day 6 - Kirindy to Morondava

Almost the whole day is still available for visits to the Kirindy Forest and wildlife viewing.The Kirindy Reserve is only two hours away from Morondava by jeep, so it is easy to watch the sunset on the baobab avenue on the way back to Morondava.Overnight at Kimony Resort.

Day 7 - Morondava to Antsirabe

After a very early breakfast we will drive up the newly built "Chinese Highway" through the steppe-like landscape to Miandrivazo, here the Mahajilo River, which is called Tsiribihina a little further on, flows by. It is one of the hottest places in Madagascar. From there we go up to the coldest and highest town that we could already explore at the beginning of the tour-Antsirabe.Overnight stay in the hotel "Chambres du voyageur".

Day 8 - Antsirabe - Sahambavy

Scenically very varied day, dominated in places by the first rice terraces and the TAPIA forest. The tapia trees are frequented by butterflies that lay their eggs on their leaves. From the harvested cocoons, local artisans extract the precious fiber to weave the famous raw silk fabrics.We are now in BETSILEO country, a winding road, a region of mountains and hills; the rice terraces pass us by, and the people we meet dress differently, very colorful and truly remarkable.After a drive of about seven hours, the stage ends in one of the most beautiful hotels of Madagascar.Overnight at the Lac Hotel

Day 9 - Sahambavy via Fianarantsoa to Ambalavao

In the morning, a small guided walk is organized through small rice fields and especially through the Betsileo landscape. After leaving the town of Fianarantsoa and arriving in a small village where we will be invited to a typical Malagasy meal . In the afternoon we will continue towards Ambalavao, a very important city for the Zebu trade. The landscape changes into mountains, vineyards decorate the valleys and huge boulders stand surrounded by greenery.

Day 10 - Ambalavao-Anja Park-Tsaranoro Mountains

Today we start a real adventure: After breakfast we first drive south until we reach for the first time a reserve founded by a village community which is beautifully located and where hundreds of lemurs and other animals can live undisturbed. After that we have to drive about 20 km on the RN7 until we reach the turnoff to the Tsaranoro valley, one of the accesses to the Andringitra mountains. After a 1 hour drive on a bad track we reach the Tsarasoa camp below the famous "Pic Chameleon", which lives up to its name. Here there is still enough time to do a 2-hour climb to the summit or - optionally - to "get up close" to numerous lemurs in a nearby forest area. Dinner and overnight at Tsarasoa Camp.

Day 11 - Tsaranoro Mountains

This day is dedicated to hiking in the Tsaranoro mountain range. After breakfast, we slowly ascend to the Tsaranoro Valley, along ancient zebra paths, through vegetation that is very different from what we are used to: palm trees and other tropical plants show us, despite the altitude, that we are in a completely different climate zone than the day before.In the afternoon we arrive back at Tsarasoa Camp and enjoy cold drinks and the hospitality of the staff there.Depending on the wishes of the guests it can be day hikes from the lodge but you can also set up a camp in the mountains for an overnight which allows longer hiking tours.Overnight at Tsarasoa Lodge or in the tent

Day 12 - Tsaranoro to Isalo

Today we continue south, the fertile highlands end here and a landscape of huge granite rocks surrounds us. Short rest in Ihosy and then after about 2 hours drive we reach Ranohira, situated in the middle of the wide plateau of Horombe. Here lies the famous Isalo National Park which we will visit the next day. Overnight stay in the hotel "Isalo Rock Lodge".

Day 13 - The Isalo National Park

Today you will embark on one of the most famous national parks in Madagascar, the Isalo National Park. This is a huge mountain massif where granite and sandstone sculptures alternate with waterfalls and tropical nature. The entire national park includes more than 80,000 hectares of land and offers you a maximum of scenic variety. The level of difficulty and also the length of the tour through the park are adapted to Your personal wishes as well as adapted to your conditional requirements. After the exciting day trip follows again an overnight stay in the hotel Isalo Rock Lodge (4****).

Day 14 - Ride from Ranohira via Ilakaka to Sarondrano

There is no opening of the borders in sight in Madagascar and we are at the beginning of the rainy season, which is the low season, even in normal times. I have started a fundraiser for the guides and drivers I know well.
