Best time to travel to Madagascar - The insider's view

Madagascar is an island full of contrasts. Every season has its charm here, and every region shows its best side at different times. Klaus, who has lived on the "red island" for decades, shares his experience: "The best time to travel in Madagascar depends on your interests and flexibility. Every season has something special to offer."

Travel time December to April: The green rainy season - the best time to travel for nature lovers

"Rainy season sounds daunting, but it's actually a wonderful time to visit Madagascar," emphasizes Klaus. The rains are usually limited to the evening, while the days are sunny and pleasant. Temperatures are between 25 and 30°C - perfect for exploring. The vegetation is in full bloom and many animals are active.

  • Perfect for botanists and plant loversOrchids, flowers and lush greenery characterize the picture. This time is also ideal for ornithological trips.
  • Cheap air faresTickets are significantly cheaper, especially outside the public holidays.
  • Pure natureNational parks such as Ranomafana and Isalo shine in lush green. Our summer is a real treat, especially for botanists, as orchids and flowers dominate the landscape.
  • Flexibility requiredCyclones mainly affect the east coast, but can also affect the Mozambique Channel. With an experienced planner like Klaus, you will be spared any weather-related surprises.

Travel time May to June: Transition to the dry season - the perfect transition period

The transition period begins in May. Rainfall becomes less frequent and temperatures are pleasantly mild. In April and until mid-May, nature is still green before the landscape slowly changes to shades of brown and yellow.

"The period up to the end of June is ideal for botanical discoveries and trekking," says Klaus. The central highlands and the south in particular offer spectacular landscapes. From the end of June, it gets noticeably cooler in the highlands, which is particularly pleasant for active vacationers.

  • Whale watchingHumpback whales with their calves can be seen around Sainte Marie and on the Mozambique Channel.
  • Pleasantly cool temperaturesPerfect for exploring the highlands and national parks.

Help

FOR MADAGASCAR

After 10 months of total inactivity, self-employed people in the tourism industry in Madagascar are completely without income. There is no opening of the borders in sight in Madagascar and we are at the beginning of the rainy season, which is the low season, even in normal times. I have started a fundraiser for the guides and drivers I know well. From this money we will buy rice and other essentials and distribute them regularly, if possible, until the resumption of travel activities in April 2021 at the earliest. My special thanks to those who have already donated. I will start buying rice tomorrow and will begin distributing it this week.
