Road Trip - 15 days with Harley Davidson® through Madagascar

Those who want to explore the island of Madagascar by motorcycle are looking for a unique experience characterized by fascinating and varied landscapes, friendly and accommodating people, and an indescribable sense of freedom. However, planning a motorcycle tour in Madagascar is anything but straightforward, as the road conditions on the island are often not the best. We have therefore taken on this task for you and offer you a completely planned tour with a Harley Davidson®.

You will travel a distance of more than 2,000 kilometers from the Malagasy highlands down to the southern tip of the island. Your drive along the well-maintained RN 7 will take you past bizarre desert landscapes, tropical rainforests and mountain ranges that line your path. You'll also get to see traditional villages, rice paddies and unusual towns during the 15 days allotted for this special motorcycle tour.

You will travel on a Harley Davidson® Sportster 1200, a light, simple and yet extremely comfortable machine. We have chosen the Harley Davidson® Sportster 1200 because it is ideally suited for the sometimes very rough road conditions on Madagascar. Safety always comes first on our tours - that's why these machines are only ever ridden by one person. In the following we present you the exact tour planning in detail. If you have any questions or would like to add your own wishes, please do not hesitate to contact us. We are happy to put together individual tours for you, so that you can experience an unforgettable vacation in Madagascar.

Day 1: Arrival in Antananarivo

On the first day of your trip you will land in the Malagasy capital Antananarivo, where you will be welcomed by us and our team. This will be followed by a transfer to Villa Sibylle. Once there, a first information meeting is on the agenda. Of course you will have enough time to have a look at the motorcycles. In addition, we will provide you with lots of safety tips and information about the planned route. In addition, there will be a delicious aperitif to sweeten your first evening in Madagascar. Afterwards, you will spend the night at Villa Sybille or in an equivalent hotel in the city center.

Day 2: From Antananarivo to Antsirabe (168 km)

To avoid the traffic jams in the capital, you will start in Antatanarivo early in the morning. After only 20 kilometers, you will leave the noise of the big city behind and hilly landscapes with rice fields will unfold in front of you. The first stop in Ambatolampy will allow you to visit a table football factory and a detour to the manufacturers of aluminum kitchen utensils. Lunch is planned at a local restaurant, arriving in Antsirabe in the early afternoon. There you can enjoy a delicious dinner at the Trianon before settling in for the night at Hotel Vatolahy.

Day 3: Excursion to Hautes-Terres (70 km)

Today you will visit the big market of Antsirabe and take a tour of the city on a motorcycle before continuing to Betabo. After arriving there, you will walk to the local waterfall. There you can either have lunch as a picnic or choose to eat at a local restaurant in Betabo. In the afternoon you will return to Antsirabe with a stop at the hot springs. Dinner and overnight stay will be again at Hotel Vatolahy.

Day 4: From Antsirabe to Fianarantsoa (240 km)

In the morning you will drive through the beautiful plains with rice fields glittering in the light of the morning sun. Then you will drive into the forested region "Tapias", where many endemic tree species grow. In the town of Ambositra, a coffee break is planned and also the motorcycle tanks will be filled up. The road becomes more winding from now on and the surrounding landscape is characterized by numerous hills and traditional villages. Malagasy lunch awaits you at the Ambohimahasoa Hotel, and arrival in Fianarantsoa is scheduled for the afternoon. Dinner will be at the Le Panda restaurant. You will spend the night either at Tsara Guest House or La Rizière Hotel.

Day 5: From Fianarantsoa to Ambalavao (56 km)

In the morning, we first head to the heritage-listed upper town of Fianarantsoa before hitting the road again in the early afternoon. The road continues past rice fields and winds through a breathtaking hilly panorama. To the right and left of the road are now the famous vineyards of Madagascar. Upon arrival in Ambalavao, a visit to the village, famous for its architecture that combines wood and stone in the tree of dwellings, is on the agenda. Overnight stay and dinner will be at the hotel Tsienimparihy Lodge.

Day 6: From Ambalavao to the Isalo Massif (225 km)

In the morning hours, we first head to Anja Forest, a protected original forest area that is home to numerous endemic animal and plant species. Cattas, chameleons and co. can be admired here in the wild. Afterwards you will continue on the road. After leaving Ihosy behind, you will notice that the landscape starts to change as you are now heading towards a completely unadorned plateau called Horombe. You will then continue to the Isalo Ranch Hotel where you can relax by the pool before dinner and an overnight stay to end the day on a relaxed note.

Day 7: From Isalo to Ifaty (276)

After the first part of today's route, lunch is planned in Tulear. Afterwards, you will travel along 39 kilometers of coastal road, characterized by dune and mangrove landscapes, as well as sections dominated by thorn bush forests. Overnight and dinner are planned at the Belle Vue Hotel, which offers a great view of a large fishing village.

Day 8: Relaxation in Ifaty

Today you can enjoy a day of relaxation in Ifaty-Mangily right by the sea. Dinner is planned in the village and the overnight stay will be again at the Belle Vue Hotel.

Day 9: From Ifaty to Sarodrano (51 km)

12 kilometers south, the scenery changes again: Behind Tulear, the barren landscape reminds us of the end of the world. A tour of Tulear is planned, with a stop for lunch at La Terrasse or Chez Alain. Afterwards, we will continue over the Tropic of Capricorn on a road that passes by the coast and numerous thorn bushes. The overnight stay is planned at Eden Lodge.

Day 10: From Sarodrani to Isalo (237 km)

Today you will spend again on the plane and travel back north. Halfway, a stopover is planned at the Zombitse Vahibiasa Reserve. You will then arrive at Isalo Rock Lodge, where the overnight stay is planned.

Day 11: From Isalo to Sahambavy (244 km)

After today's drive, you will arrive at the Lac Hotel, where you will enjoy attentive service surrounded by a cozy ambiance.

Day 12: From Sahambavy to Ranomafana (49 km)

First, today you will have the opportunity to visit one of the tea plantations on site. Then you will continue towards Ranomafana on an extraordinary road that winds through the middle of the primary forest. After crossing this, you can stop for a visit to Ranomafana National Park and recharge your batteries. Alternatively, the heated swimming pool awaits at the Thermal Hotel, where dinner and overnight stay are planned. A visit to the village also proves worthwhile from experience.

Day 13: From Ranomafana to Antsirabe (217 km)

Today is divided into two stages: First, we will travel from Ranomafana to Ambositra. Once there, there will be enough time to have lunch to fortify yourself for the rest of the journey. Afterwards, the journey continues to Antsirabe, where the hotel Les Chambres du Voyageur awaits you.

Day 14: From Antsirabe to Antananarivo (168 km)

Today you will spend the last day on the Harley Davidson® and travel back to the capital Antananarivo. The arrival is planned for noon or for the afternoon, depending on where you want to have lunch. Upon arrival in Antananarivo, you will first need to drop off your motorcycles. After that you will have different possibilities how to spend the rest of the day. Our offer: By bus you can easily reach the Haute Ville, which invites you to a leisurely stroll through the city. Afterwards you can enjoy a delicious dinner at the restaurant Le Carnivore, before returning to Villa Sybille. There you can either bridge the time until your departure in the late evening or plan another overnight stay, if you have to go to the airport only one day later.

Help

FOR MADAGASCAR

After 10 months of total inactivity, self-employed people in the tourism industry in Madagascar are completely without income. There is no opening of the borders in sight in Madagascar and we are at the beginning of the rainy season, which is the low season, even in normal times. I have started a fundraiser for the guides and drivers I know well. From this money we will buy rice and other essentials and distribute them regularly, if possible, until the resumption of travel activities in April 2021 at the earliest. My special thanks to those who have already donated. I will start buying rice tomorrow and will begin distributing it this week.
