About the trip

Enduro Sport Tour - The Wild South

12 days / 11 nights, including 10 days on the motorcycle

Destination: South of Madagascar

Total distance: 1,155 miles (1,860 km)

ENDURO SPORT

For drivers from Europe a hard test of patience, for motorcyclists a challenge: Madagascar's roads are mostly paths and tracks.

More than 90 % of the carriageways are not asphalted. Even the two-lane "Routes Nationales" between the larger cities only allow speeds of up to 80 km/h. Outside the built-up area, in Madagascar's beautiful nature, conditions change from dust-dry dirt roads and savannahs to mud and slush holes and smooth laterite tracks. Five thousand kilometers of coastline and seven peaks, each over 2,000 meters high, mountains and desert - Madagascar is a lot of fun for bikers!

Short tour description

A landscape with endless expanses between sky and sea, between bush and semi-desert - that is the south of Madagascar.

Enjoy a variety of fascinating landscapes as you slowly descend from the highlands to the east coast of the island and look forward to challenging rides through sand, dirt and mud.

Welcome to our tour to the deep south!

The travel days in detail

Day 1: Arrival in Antananarivo

Our team will greet you immediately upon arrival at Ivato International Airport and transfer you to your hotel. Villa Sibylle is a private guesthouse near the airport, surrounded by a tropical garden. Relax from the flight and enjoy your first dinner there in Madagascar with an overnight stay. Milestones along the way: Antsirabe Ambositra, the city of wood carvers Ranomafana National Park Pangalanes Canal Fort Dauphin Faux Cap / Lavanono Tsimanampetsotsa National Park Anakao

Day 2: From Antananarivo to Antsirabe

Route length: 142 miles (200 km) on laterite and asphalt You will meet our team that will accompany you on the tour and familiarize yourself with your enduro machine. Off you go into the adventure of Madagascar: You leave the busy streets of the capital Antananarivo and continue on laterite underground, which is much more pleasant than the road. Discover the heart of the Highlands among the rice fields, forests and huge granite boulders. In many villages along the way you will have the opportunity to interact directly with the locals. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.

Day 3: From Antsirabe to Ambositra

Route length: 87 miles (140 km) on laterite The day's stage takes you into the fascinating world of the Highlands: through rice fields, small villages and rivers, the route descends the mountains to Ambositra, the center of craftsmanship in Madagascar. Dinner and overnight at the Hotel des Artisans.

Day 4: From Ambositra to Ranomafana

Route length: 93 miles (150 km) on laterite Experience the wildest regions of the "red island" on this day section. On a dirt road, which quickly becomes muddy, you will follow the course of a river in the middle of the pristine rainforest. The trail continues to Ranomafana National Park. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.

Day 5: Ranomafana - Manakara

Route length: 93 miles (150 km) on asphalt This unique national park, which was established only in 1991, covers more than 42,000 hectares. In this park, located at an altitude of about 1300 m, you can visit one of the last mountain cloud forests on earth. A truly unique biotope, one can see (with luck) 12 species of lemurs, over 100 species of birds, insects, frogs, reptiles, huge trees and ferns. Hikes depending on the desire of the participants. Early in the morning the drive goes up numerous serpentines to the park entrance: in the morning hours the numerous lemurs are most active and the The cloud forest then reveals all its magic. Depending on fitness and interest, different circuits can be undertaken, the whole morning is at your disposal. Now we continue through the peculiar hilly landscape near Irondro until we can sniff sea air in the afternoon: Palm trees and the typical houses on stilts indicate the proximity of the rainy east coast, then in Manakara we see for the first time the Indian Ocean rolling onto the wide beaches of the city. After barely three hours we catch sight of palm trees and the blue, endless expanse of the Indian Ocean. In the coastal town of Manakara we visit the very busy market for the first time, here the famous pepper from Madagascar and also other spices produced there such as cinnamon, cloves, turmeric and of course first class vanilla can be bought cheaply. Overnight stay in the hotel "La Vanille

Day 6: Manakara - Sandravinany

Route length: 143 miles (230 km) on asphalt and laterite The day tour starts on asphalt. You will pass Vangaindrano and drive overland along the beaches of the Indian Ocean. This tour depends on five ferries, it may not be possible to get to Sandravinany and in that case an overnight stay in Vaingandrano or on the way is necessary. You will reach Sandravinany in the late afternoon. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.

Day 7: Sandravinany - Fort Dauphin

Route length: 62 miles (100 km) on laterite A technically demanding stage awaits you: at the beginning of the day there are several river crossings with ferries. On mostly muddy ground you will reach the destination Fort Dauphin. Dinner and overnight stay at the hotel.

Day 8: Fort Dauphin - Lavanono

Route length: 155 miles (250 km) on asphalt, laterite and sand The beautiful day's route first takes you several dozen kilometers through the rainforest towards the thorn bushes of the south. You will cross the regions of Anosy and Antandroy and finally arrive at the day's destination, Lavanono. This small village is known for its beaches and popular as a surf spot. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.

Day 9: Lavanono - Itampolo

Course length: 43 miles (70 km) on sand This is the shortest daily stage on one of the most difficult routes in Madagascar. Along a beautiful coastline dotted with baobabs are the largest and most pristine sandy beaches imaginable. There is no way to stop along the way or you will be stuck in deep sand. Concentration and technique are required. Serenity you will enjoy in the evening. Dinner and overnight at the Salary Bay Hotel.

Day 10: Itampolo - Anakao

Course length: 81 miles (130 km) on sand You will never forget this image: In Tsimanampetsotsa National Park, you will stand on the shore of a lake with milky white water, surrounded by petrified trees, where hundreds of flamingos, golden plovers and other wading birds live. You will arrive quietly in Anakao. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.

Day 11: Anakao - Tulear

Route length: 174 miles (280 km) on sand and asphalt For the last section of the tour, you will start in the morning on a sandy track that will take you to National Road 13 and Betioky. You will cross the Onilahy River, get to National Road 7 and arrive in Tulear in the late afternoon. Here you can add a connecting tour via the highland route RN7 or via the west coast, otherwise hold the planned return flight the next day to Antananarivo from where the tour can be supplemented again by connecting tours.

Day 12: From Tulear to Antananarivo (domestic flight)

A cab will pick you up from the hotel and take you directly to the airport. End of our services, the motorcycles will be returned in Tulear. Of course we can offer connecting tours or additional service in Antananarivo until the return flight and also take care of the domestic flight bookings if needed.

The low density of paved roads has created an exceptional network of routes.
As large as France and Belgium, each town, village is connected by a route or path of several kilometers...

Help

FOR MADAGASCAR

After 10 months of total inactivity, self-employed people in the tourism industry in Madagascar are completely without income. There is no opening of the borders in sight in Madagascar and we are at the beginning of the rainy season, which is the low season, even in normal times. I have started a fundraiser for the guides and drivers I know well. From this money we will buy rice and other essentials and distribute them regularly, if possible, until the resumption of travel activities in April 2021 at the earliest. My special thanks to those who have already donated. I will start buying rice tomorrow and will begin distributing it this week.
