Zebu bullfights in Madagascar bush

Traditional bullfight

When bullfights are mentioned, most people think directly of bloody spectacles that often end badly for both animals and humans, and that, while they may have a high cultural and traditional value but from today's point of view still mostly like superfluous relics from a bygone era seem. In Madagascar, too, bullfights are an integral part of cultural life in many circles, although the local bullfights are very different from the Spanish ones. In Madagascar, the zebu bullfights, Savika or Tolon'Omby called, not a sporting spectacle, but instead an important contribution in the culture of different peoples living on the island. They correspond to a test of courage that many young men, especially from the Betsileo tribe have to put in order Fame, honor and recognition to obtain. In many cases, these battles are fought in smaller villages and communities in remote regions. If you would like to join us in a Theme trip or book a round trip from Antananarivo to Tulear, you have a good chance to see such a bullfight on the way. However, we would like to inform you at this point directly that also the Malagasy bullfights with the name Savika are occasionally extremely brutal spectacles However, most of them can be seriously dangerous only for the human participants. The savika is a bullfight that is carried out without weapons, without armor, without gold embroidered clothes and other paraphernalia. This fight is simply a matter of the young men of the Betsileo or the Merina trying to cling to the neck or to the hump of one of the wild zebus and to be able to hold on here for a few moments without being thrown off, injured or trampled. It is a test of courage of the most difficult degree, as the zebu bulls in the small makeshift arena are anything but peaceful and begin to rage mightily among the daredevils with their horns and sheer muscle power. Once the task is accomplished, however, the bulls are immediately escorted out of the arena and can go on with their normal lives. If you are interested in this traditional and cultural spectacle interested, just feel free to contact us. Savika is often carried out in connection with major festivals and holidays, and they are often on the schedule, especially during the winter months. Help

FOR MADAGASCAR

After 10 months of total inactivity, self-employed people in the tourism industry in Madagascar are completely without income. There is no opening of the borders in sight in Madagascar and we are at the beginning of the rainy season, which is the low season, even in normal times. I have started a fundraiser for the guides and drivers I know well. From this money we will buy rice and other essentials and distribute them regularly, if possible, until the resumption of travel activities in April 2021 at the earliest. My special thanks to those who have already donated. I will start buying rice tomorrow and will begin distributing it this week.
