Road Trip – 19 days on the Harley Davidson® through Madagascar
Discover the island of Madagascar on the back of a Harley Davidson® over a distance of more than 2,500 kilometers and look forward to an experience that will be remembered for a long time to come. Because on this incomparable tour you will not only discover breathtaking landscapes and enjoy the hospitality of the Malagasy people, but also experience an impressive variety of tourist highlights. In addition, thanks to our many years of experience, there is also plenty of space for good food and sights away from the main tourist routes. Along the RN 7 you dive into a world that can not be compared to anything else on this planet. On the Harley Davidson® you roar over bumpy slopes and winding streets, past rice fields that sparkle in the sunlight, bizarre desert landscapes, mangrove areas and unique primary forest, where live numerous animals and plants that can be found nowhere else on this earth.
During the tour, you will be traveling on a Halrey Davidson® Sportster 1200, a light, sleek yet comfortable bike. This machine is intended for a driver and offers maximum safety even on the sometimes difficult roads of Madagascar. Would you like more detailed information about the machines or our tour? We want your holidays in Madagascar to be the biggest adventure of your life with the Harley Davidson® and we are always ready to take your individual ideas, wishes and preferences into consideration during the given tours. Day 1: Arrival in Antananarivo
You reach the island of Madagascar by plane and land in the capital Antananarivo. From the airport you will be picked up by us and our team and taken to Villa Sibylle. There you can already expect the machines together with an ice-cold aperitif. This will be followed by a briefing by our guide as well as the discussion of safety information and details about the route. You can then stay overnight either directly at Villa Sybille or (depending on the ideal conditions for a quick start in the early morning) in an equivalent hotel in the city.
Day 2: Antananarivo to Antsirabe (168 km)
The first day of your journey on the Harley Davidson® through Madagascar begins early in the morning to avoid getting stuck in the turbulent traffic of the capital, Antananarivo. For getting up early you will be rewarded with a fantastic view after only a few kilometers, when the buildings of the city are left behind and the breathtaking landscape unfolds in front of you with the rolling hills and the many rice fields. Ambatolampy is planning a stopover, where you can admire the sometimes bizarre production of aluminum kitchen utensils or watch the table football game. For lunch, you will stop at a small local restaurant. In the early afternoon, you will arrive at Antsirabe and check in at Hotel Vatolahy. Until the aperitif and dinner in the Trianon you have a few hours left to free.
Day 3: A detour to Hautes-Terres (70 km)
Before you go to Hautes-Terres by motorcycle, you can look forward to a trip to the large market of Antsirabe. Another highlight of the day is the bike tour of Antsirabe before taking the exit to Betafo. Once there you will have a short walk to the impressive waterfall, where you can enjoy a picnic lunch. If you prefer to dine in a restaurant, you can find it in Betafo. In the afternoon we head back to Antsirabe, but not without a trip to the natural thermal baths of volcanic origin, which spoil us with hot water. Hotel Vatolahy awaits you for dinner and overnight.
Day 4: Continue to Ranomafana
First it goes over a relatively straight road through lush plains, which are dominated by paddy fields. Then the landscape changes and the wooded region “Tapias” joins. There you can discover numerous tree species that occur only in this region. When you pass Ambositra, you have the opportunity to take a coffee break and refuel your machine. From now on, the road winds much stronger and many traditional villages and hills line the road. When you reach Ambohimahasoa, you can recharge your own energy reserves at a typical Malagasy lunch. Then it’s on a spectacular road that runs directly through the unique primary forest, directly to Ranomafana. If you want to get to know nature even closer, you should visit the Ranomafana National Park. Alternatively, a detour to the village or to the hot swimming pools to inspire. In turn, you will arrive at the Thermal Hotel for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 5: Ranomafana to Manakara
Today’s section takes you along the east coast. The road leads through an impressive landscape, which thrills with lush green vegetation. In the afternoon, you will reach Manakara, where you will check in at Hotel Vanilla.
Day 6: The area of Manakara
The area around Manakara has a lot to offer tourists. Today, it’s about 12 kilometers north, and then you board a boat that will take you across the Pangalanes Channel. The mighty waterway is already quite impressive on its own. However, at least as fascinating is the planned detour to a completely isolated village, which promises many lasting impressions. At the end of the day we will head back to Manakara, where you will find the Hotel Vanilla.
Day 7: Manakara
Today is completely at your free disposal. You have the opportunity to explore Manakara yourself or to see the Indian Ocean up close. A detour to the “Trou du Commissaire” is well worth it. Overnight accommodation is either one of the hotels or accommodation at Hotel Vanilla.
Day 8: Go to Sahambavy (250 km)
Today, it goes back over the already known winding road. You drive through a hilly landscape, enjoy the view of the tropical forests and travel back towards the highlands. Arrived in Sahambavy, the Lac Hotel welcomes you. This boasts a special location in a small wooded area right on a lake.
Day 9: Continue to Ambalavao (68 km)
Although today’s stage is only a few miles long, it still has a number of highlights: In Sahambavy, start the day with a visit to a local tea plantation before continuing to Ambalavao in the early afternoon. The beautiful road leads through the already known rice fields and in the background opens a fascinating panorama with numerous hills and the famous wine growing areas of Madagascar. After arriving in Ambalavao, you will have enough time to visit the village, which is famous for its extraordinary architecture. Afterwards, head to Tsienimparihy Lodge, where you can enjoy a restful night’s sleep after dinner.
Day 10: Go to the Isalo massif (225 km)
In the morning you will first have a visit to the unique Anja Forest, where not only numerous animal species such as kattas or chameleons are at home, but in the conservation of Madagascar has top priority. Afterwards we continue past Ihosy before finally reaching the Horombe-Plateu with its impressive landscape. The Isalo Ranch Hotel awaits you, where you not only have dinner and spend the night, but also relax by the pool.
Day 11: Continue to Ifaty (276 km))
The first thing to do is to head to Tulear, where lunch is planned. Then you drive along a 39 kilometer route along the coast, where you can expect some surprises in the landscape: sand dunes, mangrove areas and sections in which thorny bushes dominate the picture alternate. From here you will go directly to the Hotel Belle Vue, which will spoil you with comfortable rooms and a dinner. Enjoy the view of the large fishing village and make yourself comfortable.
Day 12: Ifaty
Today you can safely leave the machine at the hotel and enjoy a relaxing day. Make sure you make a detour to the sea and enjoy the sun and the crystal clear water. In the village of Ifaty, dinner awaits you before returning to Hotel Belle Vue for the night.
Day 13: Continue to Sarodrano (51 km)
Even the current section of the route is rather short, but in terms of the landscape it is a revelation. It goes under the Tropic of Capricorn through a region that visually reminds of the end of the world. The long coastal road is lined with thorny bushes and offers a spectacular backdrop. Later, Eden Lodge welcomes you to spend the night.
Day 14: Go to Isalo (237 km)
Today it’s back to Isalo. Back in the north, the landscape changes again. Another stopover is also planned on this section: Zombitse-Vohibiasa. There you can visit the National Park before going to Isalo Rock Lodge for the night.
Day 15: Continue to Fianarantsoa
Day 16: Fianarantsoa
Day 17: Return to Antsirabe (217 km)
Today’s tour is made up of two sections: First you set off for the Ambositra with the Harley Davidson®. There is a short stop for lunch scheduled. Strengthened the tour then continues to Antrisabe, where you are expected in the hotel Les Chambres du Voyageur for the night.
Day 18: Return to Antananarivo (168 km)
The tour through Madagascar is now coming to an end and you are driving back to the capital of the island. Depending on whether you want to stop for lunch on the way, Antananarivo can be reached either around noon or in the early afternoon. Now it’s time to say goodbye to the bikes. Afterwards, take a bus to the Haute Ville before having dinner at the restaurant Le Carnivore. Then you expect the return flight either at the Villa Sybille or you spend another night here, if you leave only the next day.
