The economy and politics<\/strong> of a country are important factors in keeping it alive. Madagascar was a French colony for many years<\/strong> and has only been independent for a comparatively short period of time, unfortunately France still interferes in Malagasy politics more than 50 years after the country's independence. The following sections will provide a brief overview of the current political and economic situation of Madagascar<\/strong> be given. The current political situation<\/h3>\n

Especially the political upheavals in 2009<\/strong> have damaged Madagascar's reputation in many ways. This year saw the fall of the then Mayor of Antananarivo<\/strong>Andry Rajoelina, together with the Malagasy military, formed the government that had been in power until then. In 2003, nearly fifty percent of Madagascans had resources of less than a dollar a day to spend on food or consumer goods.
