About the trip

Driving yourself on Madagascar's dirt roads

Driving yourself in Madagascar was almost impossible until our offers. Unlike other African countries known for this, Madagascar remained untouched by this trend due to the somewhat rustic conditions and also because of the difficult traffic conditions.

It is not easy traffic conditions even now and self-driving while on vacation in Madagascar is not for beginners.

The trip is a fascinating mix of breathtaking and incredibly diverse landscapes, partly on asphalt and about half on sandy tracks of medium difficulty. A local guide is present and takes care of the guests and the vehicle.

The travel days in detail

Day 1: Arrival in Antananarivo

After completing the visa formalities, you will be picked up by one of our guides or by the hotel directly at the airport. Depending on the time of arrival, either a hotel transfer and well-deserved rest is on the agenda or, if time permits, various activities are possible. In any case, the guesthouse is always close to the airport. Overnight stay in the "Villa Sibyl"

Day 2: Antananarivo - Antsirabe

The driver takes over the car as agreed until the chaotic city of Antananarivo is out of sight. Antsirabe is the highest city in the country and a former health resort, located at an altitude of about 1600 meters. There are very beautiful lakes of volcanic origin and countless hiking opportunities. Bicycle tours are possible and can be organized upon request. One of the excursions takes us through a peaceful and rural area including a picnic at a waterfall whose rocks are overgrown with lianas and all kinds of tropical plants. On our return to Antsirabe we can visit some workshops of local craftsmen (e.g. gemstones, tin toys). Overnight stay at the "Chambres du Voyageur"

Day 3: Antsirabe - Miandrivazo - Morondava

This day will be dedicated to Morondava and the surrounding area. We will make an excursion to the north and visit the famous "Baobabs Amoreux", which hold each other like two lovers entwined. We will also see the unique "Avenue of the Baobabs", one of the most famous motifs of all Madagascar. In the afternoon we return to Morondava and have the opportunity to get to know the town and visit one of the excellent restaurants. Overnight at the hotel "Chez Maggie".

Day 4 - Morondava and Surroundings

This day will be dedicated to Morondava and the surrounding area. We will make an excursion to the north and visit the famous "Baobabs Amoreux", which hold each other like two lovers entwined. We will also see the unique "Avenue of the Baobabs", one of the most famous motifs of all Madagascar. In the afternoon we return to Morondava and have the opportunity to get to know the town and visit one of the excellent restaurants. Overnight at the hotel "Chez Maggie".

Day 5:Morondava-Belo sur Mer

After breakfast, we leave Morondava in a southerly direction and drive on sandy tracks through a landscape dominated by baobabs, dry forest and agricultural land. Here a four-wheel drive car is indispensable and provides the necessary comfort in all the difficulties of the track. Around noon we reach the wide lagoon of Belo-sur-Mer, where salt is traditionally extracted. On a raised causeway we drive to the town of Belo, which leads an island existence in the middle of the wide lagoon and lies directly on the sea. Accessible by car only when the moon is in the right phase, Belo-sur-Mer also represents a center of shipbuilding. Numerous shipyards build the famous coastal sailing ships called "Boutre" here. Accommodation at the "Ecolodge du Menabé" near the beach.

Day 6: Belo-sur-Mer - Manja

In the morning we leave Belo-sur-Mer in southern direction. The landscape changes: it becomes drier and drier, the ground is stony and also the road can often only be driven at walking pace. You may see the most impressive baobabs in all of Madagascar. Finally we reach Manja, a town in the middle of nowhere, dominated by cattle farming and still very pristine. Nevertheless, the town is a bustling market town with its own charm. Accommodation in the simple "Kanto Hotel", the only accommodation in town

Day 7: Manja - Morombé

On a strenuous, at first stony and then more and more sandy track, the route leads through a quiet, karstified hilly landscape. Then it becomes greener and more wooded again. Small villages line the road. We finally reach the wide riverbed of the Mangoky, where a quaint ferry takes us across the river. In the dry season only a narrow river in the middle of a huge sandy area, the Mangoky swells to a mighty stream in the rainy season. Then we reach Ambahikily, an important market town, which shows us the proximity of civilization again. From here, a fairly good road leads to Morombé, which we reach in the afternoon. Once an important seaside resort, Morombé now leads a tourist shadow existence. Therefore, the number of accommodations and restaurants is extremely limited. We will stay at the hotel "La Pirogue d'Or" directly on the beach.

Day 8: Morombé - Salary

We leave Morombé in a southerly direction and drive on the dirt road parallel to the coastline through a jungle-like dry forest. Andavadoaka, the insider tip for dropouts and paradise for divers, is our next stopover. Situated on a wide bay, the village with its nested houses seems remote and picturesque. After a breather in one of the restaurants on the shore, we continue south, always along the coast through a sublime dune landscape. Passing small villages of Vezo fishermen and driving slowly on the bumpy road, we finally arrive in the afternoon at the bay of Salary, another "insider tip" for Madagascar travelers. Huge sand dunes surround the blue shimmering bay, miles of sandy beaches offer "postcard motifs" without equal. We are accommodated by Salary Bay, who have built a bungalow complex directly on the dunes and are running a remarkable project in harmony with the local Mikea people. This tribe is the smallest in Madagascar and has a very archaic culture based on fishing, flamingo feather trading and honey gathering. Overnight stay at "Salary Bay

Day 9: Salary - Ifaty

After breakfast, we will continue south. Since the course of the tracks through the thorn forest changes after each rainy season, the route can either run directly along the sea or many kilometers inland. In Manombo we take a short rest and refresh ourselves with cool drinks in the only store of the remote village before we continue southward. In the late afternoon we finally reach Ifaty/Mangily, "the" beach paradise par excellence, and check into our hotel. Water sports are very popular here and you will have plenty of time to do them during the next two days. Accommodation in the comfortable "Hotel Belladonna" directly by the sea

Day 10- Ifaty and Surroundings

You will have the opportunity to relax from the exertions of the trip on the beach, snorkel/dive, take a boat ride or even go "kite surfing", which is offered here in a special way. The hinterland also has a variety of attractions to offer: the well-known "Reniala Reserve offers insights into the flora and fauna of the south. In the "Village des Tortues" you can see an interesting breeding and protection program for the rare ray and spider tortoises. Also the cuisine here is of course "maritime": friends of fish and seafood will get their money's worth here. Overnight stay at "Hotel Belladonna

Day 11: Ifaty - Tulear - Sarondrano

After breakfast, we head south on the sandy dirt road to Tuléar, the large port city on the Mozambique Channel. On the program is a visit to the city. The use of the internet and shopping are possible again after the long drive through remote areas. Before approaching the headland of Sarondrano, which stretches out between sand dunes and mangrove forests into the turquoise-blue Lagon, it becomes exciting. Between Tuléar and Saint Augustin lies one of the most beautiful guesthouses I know on this island. "Résidence Eden Lodge" is still an insider tip, but it will not remain so for long. Overnight stay in the hotel "Résidence Eden Lodge"

Day 12 and 13: Sarondrano

Two well-deserved days of vacation follow, but they by no means have to "degenerate" into banal beach vacations if this form of passive vacation is undesirable. The Tsinjoriake Nature Park offers many opportunities for visits, humpback whales can be observed during migration and canoes as well as outrigger pirogues are available to drive through the mangrove forest. The grotto and dunes of Sarondrano are also worth a visit. If a longer stay is desired, one can also continue by boat to Nosy Ve, Anakao and Itampolo. Overnight stay at the hotel "Résidence Eden Lodge"

Day 14: Sarondrano - Tulear - Antananarivo

After breakfast we say goodbye and drive back to Tuléar to the airport. There we board a plane and fly an hour up to Antananarivo, the capital where the trip began. If the flight arrives in the morning we will have the opportunity to get to know Antananarivo and the surroundings of the city. If the flight arrives late, pick up at the airport and transfer to the hotel. Dinner there or in a special restaurant Overnight stay at the hotel "Villa Sibylle

Day 15: Antananarivo and surroundings - Airport transfer

Especially nice is the "Lemurs Park", if young and old have not yet had enough of the droll animals. There are also other sights in abundance. Your tour guide will be happy to advise you! In the evening we will bring you to the airport. Usually the flight home leaves after midnight, so you will appreciate the possibility of a "day use" at the hotel and can prepare everything in peace before the flight. Day Use at "Villa Sibyl"

Important notes

A local and resident driver will be present throughout the trip and will maintain the status of "captain on board", as he knows the roads and the conditions of the trip and can assess situations and dangers much better. He has the right to take over the car if the guests drive badly or dangerously. Guests have the right to drive with the exception of the chaotic city of Antananarivo as long as they do not endanger other people, themselves, the Toyota Landcruiser provided or other vehicles. The stages are planned so that it should never happen at night. This tour is customized according to the wishes and expectations of the guests, therefore there is no flat rate for it. Please inquire directly with. It is possible to book this tour as an individual tour on your travel dates. This tour is only possible from mid-May to mid-November. The south and the east of Madagascar are very hot areas, the coolest months would be June to August but in the remaining months where the tour is offered it is of course also feasible without any problems. Although it is not a physically demanding trip, it should be clear from the beginning that the participants should not have any serious health problems because medical care can be difficult when you are far from the usual routes. The climate is mostly very warm to hot but it can get very cold in the highlands during the winter months (June to August), so both light summer clothing and warmer clothing must be taken.

Help

FOR MADAGASCAR

After 10 months of total inactivity, self-employed people in the tourism industry in Madagascar are completely without income. There is no opening of the borders in sight in Madagascar and we are at the beginning of the rainy season, which is the low season, even in normal times. I have started a fundraiser for the guides and drivers I know well. From this money we will buy rice and other essentials and distribute them regularly, if possible, until the resumption of travel activities in April 2021 at the earliest. My special thanks to those who have already donated. I will start buying rice tomorrow and will begin distributing it this week.
